Why Pilates for Sacroiliac Joint Pain?

Introduction to Pilates Physical Therapy

Pilates physical therapy is a specialized approach to rehabilitation and fitness that integrates the principles of Pilates with traditional physical therapy techniques. It focuses on improving core strength, muscle and joint flexibility, balance, and overall body awareness to promote optimal movement patterns and as a result reducing pain.

Core Stabilization

One key aspect of Pilates physical therapy is “inner” core stabilization. This involves activating and strengthening the deep muscles of the core, including the transverse abdominis, pelvic floor, and multifidus. These muscles provide essential support and stability to the spine and pelvis, helping to maintain proper alignment and articulation of SIJ.

Enhancing Mobility and Function

Through targeted exercises and movements, Pilates physical therapy aims to improve coordination, stability, and mobility of the sacroilijc joint and surrounding muscles.

Comprehensive Rehabilitation Approach

Incorporating pilates based exercise into your physical therapy sessions allows for a comprehensive approach to rehabilitation, addressing both the symptoms and underlying causes that led to SIJ dysfunction. By promoting balanced muscle activation and proper biomechanics, individuals can achieve lifelong pain relief and optimized function.

Our Approach to Treating SIJ Pain

  1. Comprehensive Assessment: Our program begins with a thorough evaluation of your sacroilic joint pain condition to understand its root causes and severity.

  2. Personalized Treatment Plan: Based on your assessment, we create a customized treatment plan tailored to your specific needs and goals.

  3. Specialized Techniques: As a physical therapist and a Pilates Instructor, I blend my anatomy & physiology knowledge with pilates based exercises to develop a comprehensive program. I frequently integrate corrective exercises and manual muscle energy techniques to aid in your rehabilitation.

  4. Benefits Over Traditional Therapy: Pilates offers a holistic approach to SIJ pain relief by targeting multiple areas of your body in one session. We may be working on core stability, hip and shoulder flexibility, spinal mobility and intrinsic muscle strength.
